Artist's Description

"HISTORIC ELKHORN TAVERN" by James Barber

Elkhorn tavern, located at the Pea Ridge Civil War Battlefield in northwest Arkansas, has been at the crossroads of history for many years, The first telegraph in this region was built along this road, which is known as the wire, or telegraph road. This same road was used as the "Trail of Tears" when native Americans were forcibly relocated. The Butterfield Stage also ran this road. The tavern was also used as a hospital after the bloody battle of Pea Ridge. The trademark for this building is the skull and antlers mounted on the peak of the roof.
